PostA week in the style of : Bel Jacobs

Bel Jacobs Freelance fashion and arts journalist Bel Jacobs shares the best of high end and high street on her blog beljacobs.com. As a previous London Style Editor, when it comes to fashion she’s seen it, worn it, loved it. Plus she’s a serious flats aficionado. So who better to wear us through her week in some of Clarks hottest summer looks…

BUY - Hotel Bustle

FRIDAY. Yes, sorry, but sometimes freelancers like me bunk off and take a walk in the park on a working day. The weather was lovely, the picnic was ready. I threw on a maxi dress and Hotel Bustle, Clarks take on fisherman sandals and was off. A bit of research has unearthed that fisherman sandals are incredibly ancient and are distinguished by the strappy open design – presumably so that water can drain away should you need to splash through the waves to nab your catch. Clarks feminine take on the style offers the design in a pretty, almost nude, oyster leather with a low block rubber heel and looks just as nice under cropped jeans as they do under floaty dresses. What I liked was the way the bold tile pattern of the dress worked against the soft colour of the shoes – but, in the end, it was the sunshine that won out.

BUY - Griffin Monty

THURSDAY. Sometimes, I like to step away from the computer and the shops and the press days and consume fashion through glossy hardbacks and theoretical tomes. If this makes me sound like a brainbox, rest assured I spend a ridiculous amount of time looking at pictures – but it makes for a lovely day, curled up in an armchair with a cup of tea, scented Mila candle in the background. This week, I did it in a black silk shirt from H&M and trousers by Stefan Schneider, all very loose and comfortable, so a sharp accent via a patent shoe was just what was needed. Clarks Griffin Monty with chunky buckled strap and razor cut sole, is another take on T-bar style, a timeless classic of kids’ fashion and a symbol of childhood so perfect for a day spent learning stuff…

BUY - Hamble Oak

WEDNESDAY. You might think it’s foolhardy to wear new kicks to a series of press days spread East to West across the capital but I felt pretty confident that this pair of Hamble Oak shoes would see me through – and they did. Clarks summer flats have been inspired by the shapes of men’s footwear and then given lovely twists – which is why there’s nothing stuffy about these puppies. The lines of the contrast panels, the punched detailing and the ribbon laces may feel traditional but the mix of dusty pink and soft cream make them anything but. ‘The feel of crafted city tailoring with a country twist,’ Clarks says. My outfit today was pretty serious – a favourite white shirt by Isa Arfen over Cos navy trousers – and needed some loving. The brogues did the trick (thank you also to Rodnik Band for my Snoopy handbag!). Photo: Phillip Waterman, www.phillipwaterman.com

BUY - Taylor Palm

TUESDAY. Tuesdays are about planning: going through emails, arranging the diary (takes longer than you’d think) and planning stories for the week. I hot desk it so I tend to dress down, as in this easy tartan shirt dress by Urban Outfitters’ own brand, Cooperative. But down shouldn’t mean dowdy and there’s no easier way to sharpen a casual outfit than with some choice metallic accessories. Clarks Taylor Palm is a classic brogue, cleverly turned into a closed toe T-bar sandal with a delicate pointy toe and sweet buckle fastening. It comes in black and in a sophisticated two-tone but, in silver, it reminds me of Stella McCartney’s metallic faux-leather loafers, currently for sale at, ooh, 20 times the price. They’re easily dressed up or down and the open sides make them perfect for warmer weather. Expect to see me out and about in these a lot. Photo: Phillip Waterman, www.phillipwaterman.com

BUY - Busby Folly

MONDAY. It’s a testament to the brand that, when Clarks called up and said, ‘Hey, spend a week in our flats’, I didn’t flinch. A childhood in flip flops left me with zilch heel arch and ankle problems. Heels are a no-no so Clarks, which offer a plethora of features to make wear more comfortable, are just the thing. First up was this natty take on tassel loafers. With their roots in Native American moccasins, loafers have made the transition to bona fide office footwear – which is why wearing a pair of Clarks Busby Folly loafers with a suit seemed to make sense for a meeting-laden Monday. The white leather and tassels lift that straight cut in a way which sensible black shoes could never do. And I love how the look starts to go a bit nautical, as if I’d look at home on a yacht – all down to those shoes. Photo: Phillip Waterman, www.phillipwaterman.com

PostMonochrome: Grey days in summer

As part of London Collections: Men we gifted two of our favourite bloggers Jonathan Daniel Pryce - GarconJon.com and Iñaki Carvajal – FashionFrankly.com a new pair of kicks. Although the two styles were worlds apart both bloggers teamed them with grey monochrome – which means there must be something in it.

Garcon Jon

Jonathan’s oxblood Oxfords, red socks and gold watch popped against the grey backdrop of his fitted knit sweater and crisp slacks.

Iñaki wore his sand suede Desert London’s barefoot with grey jeans and a grey crew neck sweater.  We’re all off to get some grey in our lives.
