From Kate Middleton to Alexa Chung, Orla Kiely is adored by those in-the-know. So before the launch of our second collaboration we took some time to find out a little more about the ‘Queen of Prints’…
Hats were the first stepping stone and I always knew there would be more. We grew our collection very quickly to include bags and accessories, which we became known for, and continued to build the brand organically to include clothing and home wear.
At the heart of our brand is always print and colour. We consistently reference and take influence from the 60s and 70s because we love it. They had so much style in the 70s – think Catherine Deneuve. I love the bold graphic patterns inspired by flowers and nature. We don’t follow trends and stay true to ourselves. It’s a style and taste that, luckily, many love.
We have colour and print at the heart of our design ethos which lends itself beautifully from fashion to home and lifestyle. I love that – I have always been inspired by architecture and mid-century design across all my work. My favourite print has to be the multi-stem. It’s the most recognizable and it’s evolved into, I’m told, an iconic print. It’s a very versatile pattern which we modify and develop each season.
When I’m not wearing one of my statement prints I like to wear Marni, Prada, Marc Jacobs and vintage when I’m lucky enough to find it. I keep it simple and tend to have one statement piece which could be either colour or print.
Orla on her Clarks SS14 collection…
Clarks has been my favourite collaboration to date. I’ve wanted to design shoes for a long time and when the offer came from Clarks it gave me that chance. It was incredibly exciting. It was my first footwear collection and the response we received was amazing. It’s shown me there’s a demand for shoes like this, and I’m looking forward to seeing our AW14 collection go on sale. We designed these shoes for people who share our taste. People who love colour and good design.
The AW14 Orla Kiely collection goes on sale 5/9/14.
